NEWS that just one litter fine was issued in Offaly in the past year has been described as "disappointing" by the Chairman of Tullamore Tidy Towns, Cllr Shane Murray.

Cllr Murray – who spearheaded the Spring Clean campaign in Tullamore on Saturday last – said Tidy Towns groups throughout the county wanted more enforcement.

"A major issue of concern for Tullamore Tidy Towns is the extent of fly-tipping and this includes dumping at bring banks. This is not only disrespectful to local residents who live nearby bring centres but also encourages more dumping," he outlined.

The Tidy Towns chief said that over the past year they have noticed an increase in large scale illegal dumping/ fly tipping, particularly in remote areas.

"To return these sites back to their original state incorporates a lot of resources in terms of staff and financial assistance from Offaly County Council," he pointed out.

"Illegal dumping also can have environmental impacts by polluting our state waters (including ground water, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, etc), damaging our soil quality, affecting our air quality from open burning activities and negatively impacting wildlife," added Cllr Murray.

He warned people that local authorities can penalise them if they litter or use unregistered waste collectors. The Gardaí can also issue on-the-spot fines for litter offences.

He urged people to only use registered waste collectors when cleaning out their sheds and garages.

Cllr Murray revealed that the bring bank facility is to be restored at the ball alley car park in Tullamore and CCTV cameras will be in place to ensure that no dumping occurs at the facility.

In the past, the area was identified as a black spot by Tidy Towns adjudicators and the council made the decision to remove the bring bank facilities.
