Woman in the Midlands repays money she dishonestly took for wedding reception

A woman has repaid the remainder of the €4,000 she had dishonestly taken for a wedding reception.

May Stanley (58) of 3 Slieve Bloom Heights, Rathdowney,  dishonestly took €3,500 from a woman and €500 from a man for a wedding reception on dates between February 1, 2022 and February 10, 2022.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had brought €2,000 to court. The sum was the remainder of the money owed to the injured parties who had received some of their money back following previous sittings.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the female injured party was in court but didn’t wish to make a victim impact statement. He handed the money over to the woman who said her brother had been the other injured party in the case.

Ms Fitzpatrick explained that the money had been paid out for “a booking that didn’t happen” and she said her client may have thought it wasn’t necessary to remain in court after the compensation had been paid.

“It is certainly not as a discourtesy to the court,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

Judge Susan Fay said she wanted a probation report in relation to the defendant. She adjourned the case to Portlaoise District Court on September 8 for finalisation.
