REVEALED: Offaly ranks as one of Ireland's most popular filming spots for TV and movies

The county shares the ranking with Clare and Kilkenny

REVEALED: Offaly ranks as one of the country's most popular filming spots for TV and movies

Charleville Castle (pictured) has been named the county's prime filming location.

Offaly has ranked as the 10th most popular filming destination in Ireland according to a recent study conducted by Virgin Media Ireland.

The research was conducted by analysing over 250 top movies and TV shows that have been filmed in Ireland and using IMDb data to examine their filming locations.

There have been a variety of hit movies filmed in the county throughout the years, such as most recently in 2021 with the critically acclaimed and visually striking The Green Knight starring Dev Patel and Barry Keoghan.

The Anne Hathaway and James McEvoy 2007 romantic epic Becoming Jane was also filmed in Offaly.

Not only this, the county is popular for TV shows too with the hit period drama about Mary, Queen of Scots, Reign, also being filmed in Offaly.

According to the Virgin Media Ireland research, what draws filmmakers to the county is its "stunning landscapes and unique charm." Indeed, Offaly's prime filming location has unsurprisingly been revealed as Charleville Castle.

Joining Offaly at 10th place is Clare and Kilkenny. Dublin came out on the number one spot with 104 movies and TV shows being filmed in the county. As the research points out, Dublin's "mix of old and new makes it an ideal filming location."
