When will second €125 energy credit come off bills in the New Year?

Householders are eagerly awaiting a number of Budget 2025 measures to take effect in their pocket, including two €125 energy credits which will reduce electricity and gas bills across the country.

The credits were announced as part of the Budget in early October 2024 and continue a trend over the last few years as the Government aims to address the cost of living crisis and rising energy bills in particular.

Every billpayer in the country will receive the energy credits with no means tests and the Government have given an update on when the second one might land on bills after the first came off in Nocember

Citizens Information says: "The energy credit will be paid in two instalments of €125. The second will be made in the new year. The Government is aiming for the first €125 to come off bills in November with the second off the first bill in January.

The Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) is overseeing the scheme. People don't need to do anything to receive the credits and they will be automatically deducted from your bill at source.

The Citizens Information also issued a warning recently over a scam related to the energy credits, advising people to ignore rogue texts.

"A scam alert has been issued to warn people about receiving text messages that tells you to click on a link to claim an energy credit. These texts link to a site that looks like gov.ie," a statement read.

"The Government is not offering any such scheme and people are warned not to click on the link or enter any personal details."
