Shane Lowry in excellent position after bogey free opening round at The Open

Shane Lowry made the ideal start to his bid for a second Open title as he carded a flawless 66 to sit in second place after the opening round at Royal Troon in Scotland.

The Offaly golfer hit five birdies including one at the last after a glorious approach shot. His other birdies came on holes four, seven, eight and eleven. He also made a superb par putt on the tenth to maintain his momentum at that point in the round.

He is one behind England's Daniel Brown who carded a six under par 66 and who was one of the last to finish on Day One.

“It was enjoyable,” Shane told Sky Sports after he completed his round. “I got off to a bit of an iffy start and holed a couple of nice par putts early on and then I was off and running."

Shane Lowry is back on course tomorrow morning and is due to tee off at 9.47am.

American Justin Thomas is three shots off the lead and two behind Shane Lowry while only 17 players managed to card under par rounds.

Among those well off the pace are Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau who recently battled it out for the US Open with the American claiming the title in dramatic fashion.
