Former Texas store has been demolished
A building which was once a grain store and then a cut-price retail outlet has been knocked down and will be replaced by Tullamore's second Aldi supermarket.
THE former Texas department store building in Tullamore town centre has been demolished.
Demolition work has been under way for a number of weeks on the multi-storey warehouse building which has been vacant for a number of years.
A new Aldi supermarket, Tullamore's second along with the other in Cloncollig, will be built on the cleared site.
Before it was converted by cut-price retailer Tom McNamara into a very successful Texas outlet, the building was a grain store for DE Williams, the big distilling and malting company.
After the closure of the Texas store (pictured below) the building and land nearby was earmarked by a developer for a major mixed use project.

However, the original plan never got off the ground and the site, along with the former Tesco/Quinnsworth area beside it, came into the ownership of two local businessmen, Tony Flanagan and Seamus Kane.
The Aldi development is taking place on Mr Flanagan's portion while Mr Kane last week unveiled plans for a residential and commercial complex on the balance of the site closer to Patrick Street.
