Ferbane AC host Lough Boora Half Marathon and 5k

The ladies winner, Heather Murphy of St Michael's, Portarlington with Ferbane AC's Paul Buckley

After a three-year hiatus the Lough Boora Half Marathon and 5k race returned on Sunday, the 2nd April. There was fantastic representation from all clubs in the County with a large number of guest runners also coming from all over the country.

The hosts Ferbane Athletics Club have in the past been lucky with our weather for our half marathon and this was no exception. The runners were very fortunate to not only have dry but also warm and sunny weather. Both races commenced at 11 a.m.

The 5k course is a flat fast course in scenic surroundings. First man home with a very impressive 16:14 was Daniel Ryan Ellis from Nenagh Olympic. First woman home was Aoife Curley with a fast time of 22:28.

The half marathon route is equally flat and fast which was proved in the very fast winning times. First man home was Ray Hynes of Donore Harriers AC with an excellent time of 1:09:54. First woman home was Heather Murphy of St. Michael’s AC with an equally exceptional time of 1:19:23.

It was great to see so many junior and juvenile athletes running on the day. The future is bright. Huge thanks to the organisers for an excellent event, to the stewards, pacers, the Visitor’s Centre for after-race refreshments and of course all the racers who supported the event. Prize winners for half marathon include:

Female: 1st place Heather Murphy, 2nd Sarah Flanagan & 3rd Siobhan O’Doherty

O40 Maria Maher 050 Oliva Sheerin

Male: 1st place Ray Hynes, 2nd Peter Mooney & 3rd John Lee (Snr)
