Weather Alert: Ireland braces for snow as Met Eireann warns of sub zero temperatures
Ireland is bracing for snow as Met Eireann warns of more sub zero temperatures on the way in the coming days.
Met Eireann says the weather is set to remain cold with wintry showers and with severe frosts and ice on the way.
However the cold snap is not set to last long as Met Eireann is forecasting that the weather will become milder from Thursday night onwards.
Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning for Ireland for this afternoon and tonight. It comes into place at 4pm today and remains in place until noon on Tuesday.
It warns that there will be icy stretches on roads leading to hazardous travelling conditions, especially on untreated roads and paths. It adds that there will be wintry showers in the northwest and southwest with accumulations possible, especially in mountainous areas, leading to disruption.

The UK Met Office has issued a Yellow Snow and Ice Warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry.
According to the latest Met Eireann weather forecast for Ireland, tonight will be very cold with a widespread severe frost, patches of mist and fog and icy stretches. Showery outbreaks of sleet and snow will affect parts of the north, northwest and southwest with some snowfall accumulations, especially on high ground. Dry elsewhere with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -5 to -1 degrees.

Tuesday will be very cold with frost and ice lingering in many areas. Sunny spells and scattered showers will occur. Showers will be most frequent in Connacht and Ulster and later in the southwest. Isolated thunderstorms and fall of hail, sleet and snow are possible, especially in the evening. Eastern and southern areas will be mainly dry. Highest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees with light northwest breezes gradually freshening.
According to Met Eireann, Tuesday night will also be cold with showers of sleet and snow. A sharp to severe frost with icy stretches and some freezing fog patches too. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees.
Wednesday will see sunny spells with scattered wintry showers, mainly in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with moderate to fresh northwest winds. Wednesday night will be very cold with a widespread severe frost and icy stretches, Lowest temperatures of -5 to -2 degrees.

According to Met Eireann, Thursday will continue very cold with frost and ice lingering in some areas for much of the day. Cloudier conditions will develop in the west and southwest with outbreaks of rain and sleet developing at times. Highest afternoon temperatures of 1 to 6 degrees, coldest in Ulster. On Thursday night, rain will spread eastwards across Ireland, falling as sleet or snow in places for a time. Temperatures will fall below zero in Ulster early in the night, but will gradually increase overnight.
Friday will be a much milder and mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with moderate west to southwest breezes.
