Couch to 5k and Fit for Life Programmes for Offaly

Ferbane AC members at a St Stephen's Day run.

With the new year set in, the focus for a lot is to set goals and fitness challenges for the next few months. Exercise helps with not only your physical health but your mental health so what better way than to join your local Couch 2 5k or Fitness for Life programmes. The programmes are for all levels of fitness from total beginners to those with a baseline. It is advisable to have a check up with your doctor before you start the programme if in any doubt.

The sessions usually involve 40 to 50 minutes of exercise including warm up and cool down. All sessions are supervised by club members and you will be advised and supported every step of the way.

The programme involves weekly sets of walking and running to time (not distance). Over the weeks, that you slowly ramp up the amount of time you spend running and cut back the time you spend walking until you’re at the point where you can actually run a 5K without stopping. Some people register to start their “running journey” and others sign up to either lose weight, increase fitness or simply to meet up with like minded people in a safe and secure environment.

Here's an outline of the programmes hosted by the Offaly Athletic Clubs over the coming weeks. You will find further details on the individual athletic club website or facebook pages.
