EARLY TALLIES: Independent Eddie Fitzpatrick polling strongly

Counting has commenced in the general election in Offaly

INDEPENDENT candidate Eddie Fitzpatrick is polling strongly in north Offaly according to early tallies from the general election count centre in Birr.

A tally of the Cloneygowan vote showed he captured a massive 267 first preferences.

Sinn Fein's Aoife Masterson also polled strongly with 69 first preferences with Independent Carol Nolan and Fine Gael's John Clendennen capturing 58 and 57 votes respectively.

Outgoing Junior Agriculture Minister Pippa Hackett took just 20 first preferences in what is her local area with Claire Murray of Fianna Fail capturing 13 votes and Independent Fergus McDonell on five votes
