WATCH: Carol Nolan tops the poll in Offaly and is elected just before midnight

The fifth count was announced just before midnight in the Offaly General Election Count Centre in St Brendan's Community School in Birr and Carol Nolan was deemed elected.

A smiling Carol was hoisted aloft by her victorious supporters, to a round of applause by everyone in the half-filled Count Centre after a very long day of tallies and election counts.

She was the first of the candidates deemed elected in the three seater constituency.

After the fourth count the Fianna Fáil candidate Claire Murray was excluded and her surplus votes were distributed. 447 of these went to Carol Nolan bringing her total up to 9,594, exceeding the quota of 9,347.

This means that this will be Carol's third term as a TD representing the people of Offaly.
