Over 700 Offaly requests for aid following Storm Éowyn

There were 707 applications from Offaly registered under the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme that was opened after extensive damage caused by Storm Éowyn in January of this year.

The storm which hit on January 24 resulted in extensive damage in Offaly and around the country. There were power outages everywhere and some people were left without power for days or even weeks. The water supply was also affected in some places with many having to get water at tankards supplied by Offaly County Council.

The county was covered by a red alert and people were warned to stay indoors while the storm progressed.

In the aftermath the Council outdoor staff removed 160 trees across the county as well as assisting ESB crews. A number of dangerous trees were also removed across each of the three Municipal Districts. Throughout the three districts the council received 148 calls.

County Galway had the highest number of applications for assistance with 30,592, County Mayo had the second highest with 17,303, and County Roscommon had the third highest with 8,702 applications.

Currently there are 22,149 applicants, whose claims have been decided and have not been awarded a payment in respect of Storm Éowyn.
