Mountlucas parkrun marked its seventh birthday at the weekend. The event was originally founded by Minister Pippa Hackett with the inaugural event held in July 2017.
Event Director and founder Pippa said, “It was brilliant to celebrate Mountlucas parkrun’s 7th birthday today! It has grown from strength to strength over the years, and despite a hiatus during the Covid pandemic, I believe it came back stronger than ever - with strong numbers each week and a loyal volunteer base which makes it work for everyone. Bord na Móna has been central also to its success and I want to especially thank Catherine Swaine for her unwavering support over the years.”
“I also want to pay tribute to all the regular volunteers, and to the mighty team of Run Directors who ensure each Saturday goes by seamlessly every week - so to Kevin, Neil, Paschal, Mairéad, Martin, Mary and Mark: Thank you.”
Celebrations were in full swing at the event at the weekend with hot breakfast treats for all participants, and a positive and cheerful atmosphere. Mountlucas parkrun was delighted to welcome a significant number of visitors who were in the area to attend a parkrun ambassadors event in Mullingar. Parkrun Ireland has recently become part of a Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) group within parkrun global.
The EMEA team has regular online meetings but every six months or so meet in person, and this took place at the weekend in conjunction with the parkrun Ireland ambassadors conference in Mullingar.
Many attendees of the EMEA meeting attended Mountlucas parkrun. Among these was Bruce Fordyce from South Africa. Bruce has completed a phenomenal 536 parkruns, and his parkrun in Mountlucas marked his 300th event outside of his home parkrun in Johannesburg.
Bord na Móna have been a sponsor of Mountlucas parkrun since it's inception and the weekly event is held in Mountlucas windfarm which is owned and operated by Bord na Móna. Mountlucas parkrun is grateful for the ongoing support provided by Bord na Móna.
