Tullamore Credit Union held a fundraising tea/coffee morning in the Tullamore Court Hotel, in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) on Wednesday last, May 15.

In doing so, the credit union showed its support to the 2Go cup initiative, recently launched by a number of local hotels and coffees shops, including the Court Hotel itself and Offaly County Council.
Members of community groups, local organisations, family and friends were invited to share a cup of tea and have a chat – refreshments and scones were supplied by Philip O’Brien, manager of the hotel and hosted by Fiona Egan.

Members of the Board of Directors, Oversight Committee, management and staff of the credit union also attended.
Board member Patrick Doheny welcomed everyone to the event and outlined the reasons for the gathering, stating that most people sadly know someone who has been affected by Motor Neurone Disease.

The second reason for the event was for the credit union, as a community-based organisation with sustainability responsibilities, to lend its support to the 2Go cup initiative – the Tullamore Court
Hotel as well as several other local coffee shops and Offaly County Council are working hard to rid the town of single-use coffee cups.

Incredibly, over 200 million single-use coffee cups are disposed of annually in Ireland. Using the 2Go cup instead of the single-use cup is a simple way of reducing this number.
Patrick them introduced local man, Raphael Fallon, who spoke about how Motor Neurone Disease had affected several of his friends in recent times and how this had prompted him to write and publish a collection of poems.

All funds raised through the sale of his book, which have totalled over €4,000 have already gone to the charity. Raphael then read from his book. The morning event ended with another cup of tea / coffee.
The credit union would ask members to watch out for the distinctive 2Go Cups in the following
businesses - Ballycommon Bakehouse, The Honey Bean Axis Business Park, The Little Coffee Hut Church Rd, The Phoenix, The Copper Still at the Old Warehouse and of course, the Tullamore Court Hotel – support your local business and do YOUR bit for sustainability!
