Flooding at Puttaghaun at Callary St/ Convent View on Wednesday afternoon

The flooding occurred along the banks of the Grand Canal at a sharp corner bend between Puttaghaun and Callary St/ Convent View, along the banks of the Grand Canal, near the Fiona Pender monument.

The area is the scene of frequent flash flooding and residents and local public representatives have called on numerous occasions over the past numbers of years to have the problem resolved.

There are also huge environmental and health issues associated with flooding with sometimes sewage and other waste coming to the surface through manholes on footpaths in the area.

Deputy Barry Cowen said it was very unfair on people in the area who had to endure this problem for over 30 years.

This summer, after another flooding incident in the area, Cllr Declan Harvey said he intended to contact the Minister for the Environment and call on him to assist in finding a solution.
