An open letter has been sent to Offaly county councillors on the conflict in Gaza
An open letter has been sent to all county councillors in Offaly from the Tullamore for Gaza committee asking them to show solidarity with the people of Palestine. The letter reads:
Dear Councillors,
I am writing to you following the motion brought forward to you on December 18, 2023, to fly the Palestinian flag on all council buildings in Offaly, to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people who are right now experiencing genocide in besieged Gaza.
We have watched as an international community in real time, over 20,000 people being brutally killed in the last 70 plus days. Most of whom are defenceless babies, children, mothers and fathers.
Over 90 journalists have been killed, many targeted by the Israeli government to try and hide what is happening, however, they have been unsuccessful in hiding the truth. The world can see what is taking place in real time and it is now that history will document what the rest of the world did as this took place.
It is essential that every community who can, denounce the genocide we are witnessing and it is our moral duty to do what we can to stop the aggressors, and stand with the people in Palestine. The Israeli government plans to destroy their homes and cities completely and wipe Palestine from the map and take their land and resources, under the guise of eliminating Hamas. We know this now to be the case.
We do not need to wait for history to show us their true motives, they are well documented and come from the mouths of the current Israeli ministers in the government, and Netanyahu himself. And we can see on our phones what they are doing and what is happening.
Can we as Irish people who purport to believe in democracy and the international legality of international law and at the same time turn our back on the Palestinian people and leave them to their fate? And tell our children that when they see that thousands of children like them were bombed and murdered and their homes destroyed, that we did nothing? A people with a long history of oppression did not stand with the Palestinian people and instead sided with the aggressor with our silence?
As Heaney reminds us, there is no such thing as innocent by standing. Raise the Palestinian flag and be proud that we are on the right side of history.
Le meas,
Gráinne Fallon,
Tullamore for Gaza
