AN Offaly business is the new title sponsor of one of the biggest events in Irish greyhound racing.
Greyhound Racing Ireland has announced that the Irish St Leger is being sponsored until 2026 by willwego.com
Ray Quinn, head of venues and entertainment at willwego.com, said: “We are delighted to sponsor the willwego.com Irish St Leger at Limerick Greyhound Stadium. Each one of us at willwego.com, which is the one stop shop for entertainment and events in the Midlands, are really thrilled to get the opportunity to partner with a fellow entertainment venue in Greyhound Racing Ireland.”
The well known Daingean native and former music industry retailer added: “We feel it’s a great fit for our business and we look forward to great nights out at the track in the coming weeks culminating with the final on Saturday, November 25th.”
Leon Blanche, chief commercial officer with Greyhound Racing Ireland, welcomed the sponsorship: “It’s a hugely positive announcement for the industry guaranteeing a very substantial prize fund for this prestigious competition up to and including 2026. The willwego.com Irish St Leger is an eagerly anticipated competition with huge interest. We very much look forward to the event kicking off at Limerick Greyhound Stadium this Saturday night”.
The Irish St Leger is one of the oldest and most prestigious contests in greyhound racing in Ireland.
It is run over 550 yards and was established in 1932 at Celtic Park in Belfast before moving to Limerick where the Markets Field dog track was its home for decades.
In 2010, greyhound racing in Limerick moved to its new home in Greenpark on the Dock Road and the first heats of this year's St Leger will take place there this Saturday, with another round on November 4, the quarter-finals on November 11 and the semi-finals on November 18 in advance of the final a week later.
The Irish St Leger is a coveted title and this year the winner will receive €30,000.
A bumper entry of 78 dogs are competing for the classic and as a result of Monday's draw last year's winner, Pat Buckley's bitch Bobsleigh Dream will line up against Ballymac Walt in the first round.
Greyhound Racing Ireland has said the stand-out heat in the opening round is the eighth, with Swords Rex, Bens Teddy, Glengar Martha and Clonbrien Treaty all involved.
