Irish Rail has apologised to customers as the station was left unmanned for part of today Tuesday, August 15.

Councillor Declan Harvey has criticised Irish Rail for the lack of manpower at Tullamore railway station.

He said there were elderly people at the station waiting for the train to Dublin before noon and they were not sure which platform to stand on for their train.

In addition he said the lift wasn't working to allow some older people to access the other platform and they were worried they would have to cross the bridge which is quite steep.

''If anyone needed a ticket they would have been unable to get one at the station as there was nobody there,'' said Cllr Harvey.

Irish Rail has apologised to those affected, in a statement a spokesperson said; ''Unfortunately due to a family emergency, the staff member that was due to be on duty was not available this morning.

The lifts are all in full working order

I’d like to apologise to the customers who were inconvenienced by this. A staff member did come on duty this afternoon.''

The current lift at Tullamore railway station was installed in 2021 and replaced one that was constantly out of order.

The new lift is a heavy duty stainless steel electric traction lift. Those using it are required to press a button and wait for an answer before the lift can be put into operation.
