The late Joe Larkin
WITH heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Joe Larkin, a recent resident of Killurin, Tullamore, who passed away at St. James' Hospital, Dublin on July 3 after a short illness.
Joe Larkin, a true pillar of our community, will be dearly missed but forever cherished by his family and friends. Joe's presence in Tullamore will be greatly missed, as he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and kindness.
For many years, Joe resided on William Street, where his family ran a lodging house. He began his career as a carpenter for the Tullamore Urban District Council, specialising in the creation of beautiful sash windows from his joinery on William Street.
When his father fell ill, Joe stepped up and took over as carpenter and later he became town foreman, a position he held for an impressive 45 years.
Throughout his tenure, Joe oversaw various aspects of municipal work, including water management, waste water treatment, road maintenance, and housing.
His unwavering commitment to his responsibilities earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues in the Offaly local authorities.
Even after retirement, Joe remained a reliable source of advice and assistance, always willing to lend a helping hand when called upon.
Joe's dedication to work made him a familiar face throughout the town over the years. Whether engaging in conversations about soccer and GAA at Spollen's Bar or sharing a cup of tea in the homes along O'Molloy Street and beyond, Joe's affable personality left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him.
The recent outpouring of messages from friends and co-workers during his illness brought comfort to his family during this difficult time.
As a true Tullamore GAA enthusiast, Joe's passion for the sport was evident from an early age. He frequently played football with friends in the field adjacent to O'Connor Park. In fact, Joe and his father, Rody, were responsible for crafting and installing the original concrete seating in the very same park. Their contribution is a testament to Joe's commitment to his community.
Nearly 51 years ago, Joe married the love of his life, Josie (nee Guilfoyle), with whom he shared a lifelong friendship. Together, they raised their children Siobhan, Rodge, Michelle, and Lisa.
Joe's love for his 12 grandchildren knew no bounds, and he delighted in spoiling them with treats during their trips to Galway. Salthill held a special place in his heart, and he often enjoyed driving through Connemara, followed by a visit to Kiloran’s Bar in Salthill during their summer holidays.
Joe will forever be remembered by a multitude of people for various reasons. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he enriched the lives of his family with love and unwavering support.
As a respected work colleague, Joe's professionalism and expertise left an indelible mark on the Offaly local authorities. And as a friend, his affable nature and willingness to lend a helping hand touched the lives of countless individuals.
Joe will be sadly missed by his wife, four children and 12 grandchildren. The many memories of his warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication bring them comfort at this time.
They would like to thank friends, family and neighbours for all their support during this difficult time.
