Jordan Conroy
A call has been made to honour local rugby player Jordan Conroy with a civic reception.
At the March meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Councillor Tony McCormack said he wanted to congratulate Jordan Conroy, ''on becoming the only Irish Sevens player to score 100 tries. He is way ahead of anybody else,'' he said.
''I think I brought it up before when he qualified to play in the Olympics. We should be bringing that young man in here to honour him and to bestow a civic reception on him and I think we should definitely do it now,'' said Cllr McCormack.
The young man has not only excelled but he is the top player in world sevens and in all the tournaments he has played right across the world. There are other athletes and sports people and people who achieved huge things in the county as well over the period of Covid, they need to be brought in.''
I think there are a lot of people out there that need to be honoured before you finish out your term as Cathaoirleach, said the Fianna Fail councillor to the Cathaoirleach, Councillor Neil Feighery.
''I think it's incumbent on us and you as Chair to bring some of those people in, especially Jordan Conroy who has achieved so much at international level,'' he said.
Responding, Cathaoirleach Cllr Neil Feighery said, ''I know there are plans for a civic reception for a number of people. We don't want to leave anyone out but we don't want over duplication,'' said Cllr Feighery.
''A few years ago I proposed a civic reception for Grainne Walsh. I would love to see a civic reception held here, we need to talk to Jean (Ryan, senior executive officer Offaly County Council) and with the CPG (Corporate Policy Group) and Cllr Moran (Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council) to see how we go about organising an appropriate overall package,'' he added.
