Shane Lowry books his place at US Open after spectacular qualifying performance
Offaly golfer Shane Lowry has booked his place at the upcoming US Open at Shinnecock Hills after two stunning rounds during a qualifying event in Ohio.
The Clara man started with a 68 at the Lakes Golf club and followed that with a 67 at Brookside Golf Club just hours later on Monday, June 4.
Lowry started steadily at the Lakes club without setting the course alight, picking up nine straight pars to make the turn level, but he turned on the style on the Back 9.
He collected three birdies on the trot from the 10th to 12th holes and finished his scoring charge with another birdie on the 16th, signing for a bogey-free 68.
Hours later, he started from the 10th hole and birdied 11 and 13 to continue his fine scoring, and with birdies on 17, 2 and 4, he signed for his second bogey-free round of the day.
The performances were enough for Lowry, who would have missed out based on his world ranking, to book a spot at the upcoming US Open on June 14.
Just a day before qualifyng, Lowry had performed well at the Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour, making the cut and signing for rounds of 73, 69, 73 and 70 on his way to a share of 52nd place.
