Lowry well placed to challenge at Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Offaly's Shane Lowry is just three shots off the leaders after the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament in California.

The Clara man hit a bogey-free 67 as he placed himself comfortably inside the Top 20 alongside amateur playing partner, Limerick businessman, Gerry McManus.

Lowry began steadily with two pars but picked up a birdie on his third hole, which was the 12th on the course having started on the tenth.

He made six more pars to make the turn at one under, and immediately set about lowering the score with a stunning eagle on the Par 4 first hole, Lowry's tenth hole to play in his round.

He was again steady as a rock throughout the back nine but finished with a flourish with yet another birdie on his last hole to sign for an impressive 67, placing himself in a share of 16th place on four under par.

Americans dominate the leaderboard with Kevin Streelman and Beau Hossler leading the way after round 1 on seven under par. Dustin Johnson is just one shot ahead of Lowry, while joining him at four under his fellow countryman and friend, Rory McIlroy.

Lowry is back on course on Friday afternoon as he tees off on his second round at 16.11pm.
