Alex Neil delighted as young Millwall side see off Coventry

Millwall head coach Alex Neil praised the younger players in his squad after they helped his side defeat Coventry to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Kamarl Grant scored the decisive goal at The Den, where the Lions picked up their fourth win in five games in all competitions this season.

Neil said: “I felt this was a great opportunity to test them against Championship opponents and the most pleasing thing is, when you get your chances as young players, it’s important that you win because it’s important to sample what it feels like.

“I felt the senior lads that played led them really well – I thought they did exactly what I expected of them.

“We got younger as the game wore on, so for us to come out the other end of that and win the game is a terrific achievement.”

Millwall led 1-0 at half-time through Massimo Luongo’s opener, with Grant’s towering header doubling their lead before Haji Wright’s penalty gave Coventry some late hope.

Coventry boss Frank Lampard said: “It wasn’t a game of big opportunities, either way, until we pushed at the end.

“You could see we were the stronger team at the end because of the subs that we made, but if you give away two [goals from] set-pieces, it makes no difference.

“We need the strength in depth of the squad through the season because midweek games will come in the Championship, so it’s good to see the players that came on make an impact.”
