Big win for Offaly football folk hero in big greyhound race

Paddy and Brian McCormack getting presented with trophy after winning the Pat Curtin Memorial in Mullingar on Saturday.

This week's greyhound racing included the final of the valuable Boylesports Champions Stakes in Shelbourne and locally the final of the Pat Curtin Memorial A4 Stake in Mullingar. Numerous other sweepstake action around all the tracks with Offaly dogs to the fore.

The winner of the Pat Curtin Memorial A4 Stake was Fahy Shop, a dog owned and trained by one of the greats of Offaly football, the fabled Iron Man from Rhode, Paddy McCormack.

A famously tough defender who won national fame for his take no prisoners approach, McCormack had a terrific football career, winning All-Ireland senior football medals in 1971 and 1972 as well as being a key part of the full back line on the all important breakthrough team, the 1960 and 1961 Leinster senior football champions.

He has five Leinster senior football medals, also collecting in '69, '71 and 1972 while he won four Senior Football Championship medals with Rhode in 1958, 1966, 1967 and 1969 – an eye injury ended his career in 1973 before Offaly won Leinster for a third consecutive year but relinquished their All-Ireland title when losing to Galway in the semi-final.

A former publican in Edenderry and Tullamore, McCormack has had a lifelong passionate interest in greyhounds, racing a host of very successful ones and naming them for his home town land of Fahy in Rhode.

The Croghan native won €3,500 for first prize – Fahy Shop went to the post at odds of 5-2 and had a length to spare over another Offaly dog, Lahinch Toby, owned by Clara man PJ Cleary, who won €1,500.

Another former Offaly footballer trained the winner in the final race on the card in Mullingar on Saturday evening. Remeniss was trained by former Edenderry footballer David Hanlon to victory in an A2 grade race, priced at 6-4 joint favourite – Hanlon played senior football for Offaly for Offaly in 2012, '13, '14 and '17 and won Senior Football Championship medals with Edenderry in 2011 and 2015.
