Alex Revell angry with two referee decisions in Stevenage’s draw with Mansfield

Stevenage manager Alex Revell was overcome with anger after his side drew 1-1 at home to Mansfield.

Jamie Reid had put them in front after 44 minutes.

However, in the space of two minutes Boro felt they should have had a penalty for handball and were frustrated when a Baily Cargill tackle on Jordan Roberts as he went in on goal was only deemed a yellow card.

That annoyance was then doubled when Jordan Rhodes equalised for Mansfield with nine minutes left.

Revell said: “You can only control what you can control but I defy anyone to watch that, anyone who’s head of FA and people like, and say he hasn’t cost us the game.

“We’ve ultimately cost ourselves because of the goal we’ve conceded but the decisions are completely unacceptable.

“I was told (Jordan Roberts) had lost control of the ball when he’s through on goal so it’s yellow and then the handball is just so obvious, there are no players in his way.

“Two minutes after (the Cargill foul), Brandon Hanlan’s about to pull the trigger and it’s Cargill who clears the ball.

“They should have been down to 10 and we should have had a penalty.

“But we were lacking an intensity in our play for some reason. They came here to make it difficult, they sat behind the ball and denied spaces and we huffed and puffed.

“It was a really poor goal to concede and we have to look at that because it needs correcting.”

Opposite number Nigel Clough had some sympathy with his young counterpart but he also felt Mansfield were victim of a decision going against them.

“We think Reid’s a yard offside and that changed everything at half-time,” said the Stags boss, whose side’s winless run now stands at 13 games.

“I didn’t think we deserved to come in behind at the break. We were very good and I thought we had the majority of the first half.

“We were growing into the game nicely and it was a big setback.

“It gave them a huge lift and then it was a case of getting back into the game without going 2-0 down, because the game would have been over at that point.

“But although I think their goal was offside, we got away with the sending off with Baily Cargill. Sorry but that’s a red card.

“I think that’s the first break we’ve had in two or three months. He’s miscontrolled it and Roberts has taken it in. I thought he was going to get a red card but we got away with that one.

“And then Jordan Rhodes does what we brought him in to do, one just drops to him and it’s a brilliant finish.”
