Tottenham move right for Mathys Tel and Bayern Munich – Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany insists Mathys Tel’s deadline-day switch from Bayern Munich to Tottenham was right for both the player and the club.

France Under-21 forward Tel, 19, moved to Spurs on loan on Monday with the option to make the transfer permanent.

“In every situation, we have to be honest and communicative with the players, and we always do that,” said Bayern boss Kompany at a press conference.

“We’ve discussed everything with the players, also in the long term and the human aspect, which is important for their development.

“In the end, you make a decision. We don’t focus on outside noise. We just want what’s right for the club.”

Bayern travel to Glasgow on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Celtic.

But first Kompany has to prepare the Bundesliga pace setters for Friday night’s visit of Werder Bremen.

“They’re certainly different in terms of their set-up,” added Kompany.

“We’re only focused on Bremen. We can only win one game tomorrow, against Bremen. That has absolute priority.

“They’re very good away from home. There are no easy games in the Bundesliga.”

Bayern’s defence has come under scrutiny of late, not least when they almost blew a four-goal lead in an unnecessarily nervy 4-3 win over Holstein Kiel last weekend.

“We’ve conceded goals recently,” admitted former Manchester City defender Kompany. “It’s not easy to always be perfect, but that’s our goal.

“We always measure ourselves against ourselves. We also had a phase with seven games without conceding a goal. You need composure within the team and the confidence that you’re capable of doing it.

“It’s different. You’re 4-0 up against Kiel, in other games it’s very tight. I was lucky to have been part of a 100-point season as a player in England.

“You always have to bear in mind that the whole season is important, every phase, every moment. Then you can maximise your success.

“But we’re human, we’re not perfect. We always have to try to improve what’s not going so well.”

Werder Bremen will be without captain Marco Friedl through suspension.

The club have also confirmed Friedl suffered a knee ligament injury against Mainz last Friday – before his late red card – which will sideline him for a few weeks.

Leonardo Bittencourt will be assessed after suffering a thigh injury in the same match while Anthony Jung, who was also forced off with a thigh problem, should be fit.
