George Lloyd strikes late on to salvage Shrewsbury a draw at Wigan

League One strugglers Shrewsbury came back from two goals down in the final quarter to steal a 2-2 draw at Wigan.

After Thelo Aasgaard and Dale Taylor put Latics ahead, the Shrews responded through Will Aimson’s own goal and George Lloyd’s late strike.

The home side came flying out of the blocks and were ahead inside nine minutes.

Jonny Smith picked out Aasgaard with a deep corner and Wigan’s top scorer volleyed the ball into the opposite bottom corner of the net.

Although Aasgaard wheeled away in delight, the ball clearly hit both Baba Adeeko and Taylor on the way in, with the latter claiming the goal.

Wigan were given a warning at the start of the second period when Sam Tickle had to make a very good save to keep out a Jordan Shipley free-kick.

But they found the second goal their dominance warranted eight minutes after the restart, when Matt Smith played in Taylor, who drilled home with a clinical finish.

Only a good save from Jamal Blackman prevented Adeeko making it 3-0, but Shrewsbury were handed a lifeline in the 67th minute when Aimson deflected a cross past a helpless Tickle.

And the visitors stole a point with three minutes left when Tickle made a totally uncharacteristic fumble at the near post and Lloyd stabbed the ball home from close range.
