Ollie Turton’s strike enough for Huddersfield to see off Wigan

Huddersfield made it eight League One games without defeat as they claimed a tight 1-0 win over stubborn Wigan thanks to a rare Ollie Turton goal.

A dull first half was only sparingly enlivened, with Wigan’s Thelo Aasgaard shanking a rebound off target after goalkeeper Jacob Chapman had saved Jonny Smith’s effort in the 15th minute.

Ben Wiles struck a post at the other end with a direct free-kick two minutes later, while Josh Koroma later hit the upright behind the goal as he narrowly missed the top corner for the hosts.

Wigan frustrated Huddersfield to keep the game goalless at the break, but the home side broke the deadlock within eight minutes of the restart.

David Kasumu did well to keep the ball alive from a corner and squared to right-back Turton to fire the ball into the bottom corner – his first goal for a club he joined in 2021.

Tom Lees thought he had doubled the lead from another corner 15 minutes from time, but the flag had already gone up to indicate the ball had curled out of play.
