Charlie Adam hails ‘good foundation to work from’ as Fleetwood shock West Brom

Fleetwood manager Charlie Adam highlighted the importance of “a solid base, a good foundation to work from and players who can hurt the opposition” after his League Two side’s shock 2-1 Carabao Cup comeback win over Championship West Brom.

Well-worked goals from Ryan Graydon and Ronan Coughlan cancelled out an early Modou Faal opener from the Baggies.

Adam, who has been in charge at Highbury since December, said: “We were excellent, really aggressive in the press and we had good organisation and good shape. It’s been a mentality change.

“We’ve recruited good people. The most important thing with our recruitment was that I want good people in the building, because that’s been a problem over the the last couple years – characters, attitudes, people not wanting to be here.

“And ultimately, they have to leave the football club, because we want to achieve something special and if there’s anybody here that doesn’t want to do it, then they can leave.”

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan chose to focus on the aim of squad integration after Tuesday night’s result.

He said: “We had in front of us a very good opportunity for the young players to have a competitive experience in this competition. But unfortunately we didn’t achieve the win.”

Corberan also shared his sympathies to the travelling Albion support.

“We always want to make them enjoy themselves, but we couldn’t give that to them,” said Corberan.

“They were making the effort to support the team. We have the responsibility to win football games.”
