Irish cyclist Eddie Dunbar is out of the Giro d'Italia following a crash at stage 2 of the race on Sunday.

The Irishman was caught up in a crash on stage 2 of the Giro and will not be able to continue due to injury to his right kneecap.

Eddie who managed to come in 7th at last years event, will unfortunately not be able to improve on that result at this years event.

The medical update from the race organisers reads: 

"Unfortunately following a crash on stage two of the Giro d'Italia, Eddie Dunbar will not start today's third stage. The Irishman was able to finish the stage, but after further examinations by the team doctor, the decision has been made to withdraw the 27-year-old from the race due to a sustained injury under his right kneecap and bodily abrasions."
