The Colaiste Naomh Cormac team
CNC’s adventure in the Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘C’ competition continues after a superb win over Coláiste Bhríde Carnew at Conahy Shamrocks GAA Club in Kilkenny on Saturday afternoon.
Leinster Schools Senior Hurling “C” semi-final
Coláiste Naomh Cormac 1-21
Coláiste Bhríde Carnew 0-4
The CNC team led from the very start of this game and were well on top by half-time with a 1-10 to 0-3 lead over the Carnew side. There were 13 minutes on the clock when Carnew’s Brendan Tobin drove over a long range free from his own 65 for Colaiste Bhríde’s opening score. However, CNC had scored 1-5 by that time, the goal arriving from full-forward Daniel Hand with a great shot rattling the net. Adam Screeney scored 11 points in this game, 10 from frees. These scores came from the determination of the CNC backline with stellar performances from Patrick Carroll, Charlie Bracken and full back James Mahon.
It was Stephen Kenny who brought Coláiste Bhríde’s second score of the day after 16 minutes followed by a Cian O’Tuama free after 20 minutes, leaving CNC up with a score of 1-10 to 0-3 gap by half-time.
CNC continued to add pressure in the second half despite the surface becoming more unstable and greasier after a heavy shower of rain at half time. Robert Boland scored a great point from play before an excellent clearing from Oisín Kilmartin helped Alex Kavanagh to add another point.
Goalkeeper Harry Sweeney had made great saves throughout the match and was brought outfield near the end of the match. Killian Spain took charge of the goals and provided several long range and powerful puckouts putting the Carnew team under further pressure. Mark Mulrooney assisted Daniel Hand in converting another point.
As the match progressed it was clear that Carnew had nothing left with their fourth and final score the game was well and truly over with the Offaly side cruising to a 1-21 to 0-4 win. The strength of the substitutes introduced is to be commended with strong contributions from Ultan Carroll, Donnchadh Kilmartin, Oisín Guinan and James Bracken. The team now progress to the Leinster Final against Dublin.
