In November Haverty's Pub in Birr is running a fundraiser in memory of “our good friend Alan Dempsey.” A group from the pub will take part in Movember.

“We will have sponsorship cards in the pub,” they said, “and you can donate by using the QR code on our posters that we hope to spread around the town. Please donate anything you can. Keep an eye on our page for updates and please share for us for a great cause.”

Alan, of John's Court, passed away in June. He was pre-deceased by his parents Joseph and Geraldine, his brother Brian and niece Elizabeth.

He was remembered as being a “gentleman” and a “gentle, kind soul”. He loved cycling and was a member of the Wolftrap Cycling Club. He was often seen walking his Kerry Blue dog around the town.

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches or beards during the month of November to raise awareness of Men's Health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
