Man arrested after walking into Irish hospital armed with handgun

Gardaí have arrested a man after he walked into Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda armed with a handgun.

The incident occurred shortly before 4pm on Saturday, November 11, when Gardaí were called to the scene at the hospital where the man had walked into the A&E department. 

The man in his early 30s had presented himself at the hospital for treatment, but was found to be in possession of a handgun, aswell as ammunition.

Gardaí seized the weapon and ammunition as well as a small quantity of controlled drugs, suspected to be cannabis resin.

He was arrested and taken to Drogheda Garda Station where he was detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939. He was released without charge on Sunday.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. No staff or members of the public were threatened during the incident. The items seized have been forwarded for ballistic and forensic examination.

The investigation is ongoing.
