THERE was cause for celebration in South Offaly this September as local ploughman and chairman of the South Offaly Ploughing Branch, Jonathan Murray, claimed gold in the Junior Conventional class at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, held in Screggan.

Jonathan, who placed third in the same class in 2024, returned to the national stage with renewed determination and saw off stiff competition to take home the top prize this year. His win is a testament to years of dedication and commitment to the sport of ploughing.

Jonathan has long been a driving force behind the branch’s continued success. The entire Murray family are known for their invaluable contribution to the branch and are widely regarded as passionate and dedicated advocates of the ploughing tradition.

In addition to his own achievements, Jonathan is also highly regarded as a mentor. He has coached and supported many young competitors over the years, always offering encouragement and guidance to those starting their journey in competitive ploughing.

This year, he coached Millie Standish, who competed in the Intermediate Novice class. It was Millie’s first time taking part in the National Ploughing Championships, and she made her mark by delivering an excellent performance — doing both her branch and her county proud.

South Offaly Ploughing is immensely proud of the achievements of its competitors. With champions like Jonathan leading the way and new talent like Millie emerging, the future of ploughing in the region looks bright.
