Nearly 140 people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the Easter weekend, Gardai have said.

Throughout the long weekend, Gardai conducted both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints, with 138 people being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In excess of 3,000 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first four days of the operation, with over 310 people having been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

A number of high speeds were registered on Easter Sunday including one driver doing 138 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on Cashel Road, Co Tipperary and another travelling 117 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on the N4, Co Dublin.
