RIP: Pedestrian dies in hospital three weeks after crash as gardaí appeal for witnesses

A man has died in hospital three weeks after being struck by an SUV in Co Monaghan, gardaí have confirmed.

The collision happened in the early hours of Saturday, September 6, on Broad Road in Monaghan town.

Shortly before 1am, emergency services rushed to the scene after the pedestrian, a man aged 47, was hit by the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with serious injuries.

Gardaí have confirmed that he passed away in hospital today, Saturday, September 27. The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem will be arranged.

In a statement today, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward."

They are particularly interested in speaking to road users who may have dash-cam or other camera footage from the area between 12.30am and 1.30am that morning.

Gardaí also issued an appeal immediately after the incident.

At the time, they said: "Shortly before 1:00am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle (SUV) on Broad Road, Monaghan.

"The pedestrian, a male aged 47, was taken from the scene by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he is being treated for serious injuries.

"The scene has been preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are currently in place.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. In addition, they are appealing to road users who were in the area at the time and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to make it available to the investigation."
