A baby was taken to hospital for assessment after a fire broke out at a residential property in Limerick city centre in the early hours of this Sunday morning.

Three units from Limerick Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident which happened at an apartment on Gerald Griffin Street in the city centre at 1.08am. Gardai and paramedics with the National Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

According to the Limerick Leader / Limerick Live, it is believed the fire started in the basement of the property and that smoke entered an apartment where a couple and a baby were asleep.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire upon arrival, within minutes of the alarm being raised. The baby was taken to University Hospital Limerick as a precautionary measure due to smoke inhalation.

Members of Limerick Fire and Rescue Service who attended left the scene at 1.55am.
