RTÉ postpone new series of Ireland's Fittest Family following tragic death of 15 year-old contestant

Ireland’s Fittest Family has been cancelled this weekend, after the tragic death of one of this year’s young competitors.

The hit RTÉ reality TV was set to return to screens for its 12th season on Sunday evening.

In a statement, RTÉ said the decision to postpone followed the death of a person who had taken part in the series "subsequent" to the completion of filming.

"RTÉ and Kite/Animo productions wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and friends at this time. Further details regarding the broadcast of the series will be provided in due course," the broadcaster said.

They added: “Further details regarding the broadcast of the series will be provided in due course.”

The family and community of the young Dublin teenager have been left in shock after his tragic passing, with his school issuing a heartfelt condolence online.

He was described as "a very popular member" of the school community, and also participated in local sports clubs.
