Gardai are renewing their appeal for information after a man sustained a fractured jaw in a 'one punch' assault in Cork City Centre late last year.

CCTV footage of the incident and the suspect were broadcast on Crimecall on RTÉ One on Monday night in the hope that witnesses might come forward.

The incident happened in the Hanover Street area of Cork City Centre last December.

Making the appeal, Garda Greg Freegrove told viewers the assault happened in the early hours of the morning and that gardai are seeking to identify the suspect who was captured on CCTV at a number of different locations on the night

Having initially been observed at Washington Street, he walks to Hanover Street where the assault took place a number of minutes later.

"He is seen with a group further along Hanover Street and the suspect then punches one of the people he is talking to. Now, the victim falls to the ground and our suspect walks off," said Garda Freegrove.

"As a result of the incident, the victim spent three days in hospital where he was treated for a fracture to the jaw - requiring surgery and the insertion of a titanium plate," he added.

According to gardai, the suspect is described as being in his early 20s, with a slim build and black hair. He was wearing a dark hoodie, jeans with rips at the knees and white runners.

It is believed he spoke with a French accent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact gardai in Cork City or Crimecall at 1800 40 50 60
