MEP, Luke Ming Flanagan
After disclosing his autism diagnosis on Autism Awareness Day, Irish MEP, Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, has drawn widespread support and admiration from the public.
Mr Flanagan took to social media to share his diagnosis on April 2, stating: "I was diagnosed with Autism at the beginning of February. I always kinda knew. Now I actually do know. It really helps to know."
The MEP's openness prompted an outpouring of support from social media users, commending his bravery and advocating for greater understanding of neurodiversity. One user responded, "Another brave post, Ming. Fair play coming out with this. I hope you’re doing ok."
Others shared their own experiences, stressing the significance of Flanagan's disclosure in destigmatising autism and encouraging self-awareness. "Diagnosed as ADHD as a kid so never gave much thought to any other ND (neurodivergent) until a few years back when wife's psychologist friend specialising in ASC recommended I get a diagnosis which confirmed I was autistic. Fair play Luke, good knowing who you are," one user shared.
Another commenter expressed respect for Flanagan's decision to speak out, despite political differences: "I may not agree with your political standpoint but I do have huge respect for you coming out and posting this. Autism is seen by some as a weakness. But in ways it can also be a strength. Good luck and take care."
The Roscommon man's update also inspired individuals who have been contemplating seeking diagnosis themselves, with one user saying: "Fair play Luke. I've been thinking of getting it done myself. It seems like a no-brainer for me. Just need to take the first step."
Mr Flanagan has been an MEP for Midlands-North-West since 2014, and was elected to the Dáil in 2011.
