Cllrs Eleanor Clendennen and Audrey Hennessy Kennedy recently called for Civic Receptions be held for three different groups.
The two Birr MD Councillors told a meeting of the Council's Corporate Policy Group that the Council should honour the Offaly Intermediate Camogie Team, the Offaly U20 hurlers and Birr Comhaltas Dancers.
Offaly County Council says it hosts civic receptions to “recognise an individual’s, group’s or organisation’s achievements and contribution to society at local, national or international level.”
Offaly intermediate camogie team is the 2025 All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie champions, having defeated Kerry in the final. The team won the final match 0-14 to 0-11.
Offaly's U20 hurling team, in 2024, claimed a beautifully played, maiden All-Ireland title at the grade, an emotional triumph for a county which had spent so many years in the hurling wilderness.
The talented Comhaltas dancers from Birr were crowned All Ireland Champions in the 4-hand reel and the 8-hand reel competitions during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Wexford last August.
It was agreed that Birr Comhaltas Dancers be referred to Birr MD for consideration. It was also agreed that a joint Civic Reception for Offaly Intermediate Camogie and the U20 hurlers be arranged.
