IN 1984 Rathcabbin Tidy Towns won an award for Best New Entry in the Tidy Towns competition.
The group were acknowledged as “working towards a better environment and making a valuable contribution to Irish tourism”. Now 40 years on Rathcabbin Tidy Towns has won an Endeavour Award in the 2024 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition. This award is for the “biggest improvement by an entrant in each county from the previous year”.
Since re-entering the competition three years ago the group have done very well. In 2023 they increased their points by 19 and incredibly this year they earned a 21 point increase. The dedicated group have worked hard over the last three years.
With a strong emphasis on improving biodiversity in the area the group have planted three community orchards, developed two large pollinator friendly flowerbeds and a wildflower meadow. The beautiful native wildflower meadow that was cultivated includes an impressive 37 species including the protected St John’s Wort.
Many other projects have been completed also. This 2024 Endeavour Award means a lot to the small team of volunteers who hope now that more people will get involved with the work they do. There are many more exciting projects on the horizon. Well done to everyone who played their part this year. Also a nod back to those who did their bit 40 years ago.
