Internationally important heritage site in Ballingarry needs protection

The bee boles in Ballingarry. They are 200 years old, are of international importance and need protection.

CLLR Michael O'Meara told the February meeting of Nenagh Municipal District that an internationally important heritage site in Ballingarry village needs protection and renovation.
The Councillor said he has a keen interest in the site because he's an enthusiastic beekeeper himself.
“The site is an impressive series of bee boles within the curtilage of Ballingarry Castle. It's an unusual structure and is one of, if not the best example of such a feature in Ireland.”
The Councillor added that an international group of experts will be coming to the village, specifically to look at the bee boles in the near future.
Ballingarry's bee bole structure was constructed about 1820. It comprises eighteen bee boles in three tiers, built of squared blocks of limestone with round brick-arched heads to the boles. It's located against the interior of the north-east section of the bawn wall of medieval Ballingarry Castle.
The area enclosed by the Castle's bawn walls appears to have been used as a walled garden for Ballingarry House across the road. It's likely that the bee boles were built at the same time as the house.
Due to the quality of their construction the bee boles have survived in good condition, but are now threatened by extensive vegetation growth on the bawn walls.
