Birr playground.
AN important meeting about Birr Playground is being held next week and the organisers are appealing to the general public to please attend if you have an interest in this very popular facility in the town.
Located on Wilmer Road, the Playground has been a runaway success since it first opened in 2006. However, there are some issues which have to be tackled, and with this in mind, the Birr Community Playground Committee was set up.
A small but highly successful public meeting was recently held by the Committee about the facility with a view to revamping and making the playground more user friendly for all in the community.
Many ideas were discussed during the meeting. People talked about introducing a number of new additions to the amenity, including special needs and sensory facilities, a drinking water fountain, and picnic benches.
Creating wheelchair accessibility was another idea. It's also hoped to install new equipment.
Ongoing problems were discussed including a low-level vandalism problem as well as a low-level anti social behaviour problem. These two issues occur in the evening when everyone has gone home. The fence is easily climbed over and groups of teenagers and young adults are sometimes seen hanging out there.
The next morning rubbish and graffiti are sometimes in evidence; on occasion, even human excrement; and occasionally the equipment is vandalised, including a zip wire which has been broken several times.
Overall though the playground is a very positive asset for the town and the playground committee is determined to make it even better. They are hoping for big support from the local community and they plan to launch a fundraising effort.
A committee member said the first meeting was great. “Quite a few great ideas were put forward,” she said. “Committee roles were discussed and we are all feeling energised, excited and motivated to do this for the children and families of our town.
“We look forward to welcoming all who are interested in giving us a helping hand in the future whether in joining the committee, fundraising or volunteering. Remember, many hands make light work!”
The next meeting will be held on Monday, 20th of November at 8pm, in Dooly's Hotel.
