Councillors concerned with ongoing problems with public lighting

THE recurring issue of the problems with public lighting was raised by several councillors at November’s
Birr Municipal District Meeting, which was held on Monday last.

It was reported that there are 201 public lighting faults across Offaly, with 57 of those faults within the Birr
Municipal District.

Cathaoirleach John Clendennen noted that these faults are “an ongoing issue, and we’ll only get a
handle on them using these statistics. We need to keep an eye on them across the winter”.

He then went on to pose the question: “How many of these 57 faults have been reported for 3, 6, or even
9 months?”
Councillor Peter Ormond agreed, stating that “the turnaround has to be faster. Even though the numbers
might seem small, it’s still 57 areas affected in Birr”.

Multiple councillors also mentioned the fact that it seems to be the same lights constantly having
problems, and discussed the possibility of a larger connection issue that may need to be looked at for
some of the faults.
