Ballaghveny landfill site, a few kilometres east of Nenagh. The Council is presently in the process of moving 35,000 cubic metres of waste from Rathcabbin to the landfill.
Cllr Michael O'Meara asked for an update on Shannon Vermicomposting during the recent meeting of Nenagh Municipal District. “It's now 79% clear," he commented, "and I am wondering when it will be fully decommissioned. I want to commend everyone involved. The Council has done a fantastic job so far.”
The councillor said the waste material is sponge-like and looks like wet turf. He said it's mixed with other material such as clay and gravel when it arrives at Ballaghveny Landfill Site. It's mixed with heavier material to stop it moving from its storage cells.
The former Shannon Vermicomposting site near Rathcabbin covers about ten acres. There are no buildings on site, but some concrete surfacing remains.
Cllr O'Meara was told that all of the material should be gone from the site by the first quarter of next year. He said he'd like to see the site returned to farmland. However, the previous owners, who now live in England, remain the owners of the site. The Councillor pointed out that there are also a number of creditors attached to the site, including banks and the local authority.
Cllr Ger Darcy said that everyone he has talked to has been “very complimentary of the work carried out by the council in this instance."
