SPEEDING and dangerous driving are significant problems in the village of Cloghan, a recent meeting was told.
Cllr Clare Claffey pointed out during the March monthly meeting of Birr Municipal District that a lot of concerned locals have contacted her about this issue.
“Speeding occurs regularly on the N62 near the GAA field in Cloghan,” she said.
“It happens from both directions but is worse coming in from the Birr side.
“Cars and HGVs also perform dangerous overtaking manoeuvres before passing the entrances to both the estate and the GAA field.”
The councillor said there's no crossing point and it is not safe for anybody to cross the road.
“It's a worry especially with children regularly visiting the GAA field and the playground.
“Speeding measures have to be put in place before an accident happens.
“A pedestrian crossing and wider footpaths would help here.”
Cllr Claffey also asked the Area Engineer John Mitchell if poor road surfaces in the vicinity of the Cloghan GAA grounds will be addressed as part of the N62 road improvements planned in 2023.
Mr Mitchell told the Councillor that the road surfaces will be improved.
In a Roads Report delivered to the meeting, Mr Mitchell told the six councillors that Birr Municipal District has received an initial allocation of €7,072,865 from Transport Infrastructure Ireland in 2023 towards National Roads Funding.
“€3 million of this will be going towards a Pavement Scheme on the N62 from Bolinarig Little to Derrinlough,” the Engineer pointed out. “One million Euros will be going towards a Pavement Scheme on the N62 from Cloghan to Stonestown. €200,000 will be going towards minor works on the N62 in the Crancreagh area (between Cloghan to Derrinlough).”
He added that Birr MD has also received an initial allocation of €6,030,419 from the Department of Transport towards Regional and Local Roads funding.
