Fine Gael calling for dedicated EU Funding Officer in Offaly

FINE Gael TD John Clendennen and Cllr Neil Feighery are calling for a renewed push to ensure Offaly maximises its share of European and Just Transition funding, following a recent visit from Minister of State Emer Higgins, which they hosted in the county.

Councillor Feighery intends seeking the support of Offaly Councillors for a motion calling for Offaly County Council to explore options to appoint a dedicated EU funding officer to work directly with the local authority, small medium enterprises, and renewable energy stakeholders.

“Offaly stands at a crossroads, we have unprecedented opportunities through both EU and national Just Transition supports, but navigating that landscape requires real expertise,” said Deputy Clendennen.

“By creating a specialist funding role within Offaly County Council with key performance indicators, we can make sure every possible euro is secured for our communities.”

During Minister Higgins’ visit, which included engagement with Offaly LEO and local SMEs, both Deputy Clendennen and Cllr Feighery highlighted the need for a proactive, strategic approach to sourcing funding. The proposed officer would potentially help local organisations tap into a wide range of European programmes, while also aligning with Offaly’s renewable electricity support scheme with its community benefit fund.

“Our local officials do excellent work, but the scope required to track, apply for, and manage multiple funding streams at EU level is immense,” said Cllr. Feighery. “This proposal ensures we have someone with the time and know-how to do that job full-time for the benefit of the entire county.”

If passed, the motion could see Offaly take a leadership role as a pilot county in developing a new model for rural regions seeking to unlock European opportunities.
