Plans to create a new street and housing development in the centre of Roscrea have received a major boost this morning with the announcement of additional funds on top of the €4.5-million secured in 2022 for the project.

Roscrea's Gantly Road will soon become Gantly Street and several patches of undeveloped land are designated to accommodate a new Age Friendly housing development and potential new retail locations.

The project is one element of the overall Town First Masterplan for Roscrea. Gantly Road currently has multiple vacant plots that will be repurposed subject to individual landowners wishes.

This morning (Thursday July 4) Deputy Michael Lowry announced additional funding of €428,402.58 has been allocated for the development of Gantly Street in the heart of Roscrea town.

This project, spearheaded by Tipperary County Council, was devised with the aim of creating an enhanced public realm that provides for social engagement, active travel, and support for local businesses through increased footfall.

It had an original cost expectation of €5,639,145 in late 2022 at the time of the original funding application.

The project was awarded funding of €4,511,316 at that time from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund under the Town Centre First policy.

These Project costs were recently revised, and the new cost of carrying out work on this important project came in at €6,174, 648. This increased cost led to a Revised Funding Request for the sum of €4,939,718.

Deputy Lowry said this "cumulative investment in the social fabric of the town will have significant economic regenerative effects for the future vitality of the town".

He said that when completed the Gantly Street Project will support the wider regeneration of the Gantly Street area by activating the land and installing services and infrastructure, create an enhanced public realm that provides for social engagement, active travel, and supports for local businesses through increased footfall and facilitate the creation of pedestrian links to Main Street.

The development of the new street will have enhanced cycle and walking facilities and will enable the housing section to develop an age friendly housing scheme to be built in the heart of the town.

"Overall the plan will provide a better balance of residential, commercial, community, retail and recreational uses", Deputy Lowry said.
