THE Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe has confirmed to Independent TD Carol Nolan that seven Garda stations in a number of locations across Offaly and Laois are each undergoing works valued in excess of €200,000 excl VAT.
Deputy Nolan engaged with the minister as part of her efforts to ensure the provision of greater operational hours in existing Garda stations within the constituency.
The Independent TD sought specific information on the number of Garda stations in Offaly and Laois that are subject of capital works, by location; the budget associated with same and the nature of works; the stage the projects are at currently; and the expected completion date.
“While I welcome the response from the minister and indeed The Office of Public Works(OPW), I do note with some concern that the Ground Floor Refurbishment works for Kilcormac Garda Station is only at the Tender Preparation stage while the Cell Upgrade for Birr Garda Station is merely at the preliminary stage,” said Deputy Nolan.
“I would also highlight that the refurbishment, renovation and expansion of current Garda Station and associated projects in Portlaoise is still not due for completion before 2027.
“I continue to engage with the Minister, the OPW and indeed the Minister for Justice because it is my clear view that we need a much stronger Garda presence and an increase in the operational hours of our Garda stations especially around Kilcormac, Banagher and Kinnitty where there are growing populations,” Deputy Nolan concluded.
